Why Do I Like Horses?

Why do I like horses? I think I must be mad.
My mother wasn't horsey - And neither was my dad.
But the madness hit me early - and it hit me like a curse.
And I've never gotten better. In fact I've gotten worse.
I hardly read a paper - but I know who's sold their horse.
And I wouldn't watch the news - Unless Mr. Ed was on, of course.
One eye's always on the heavens - but my washing waves in vain
As I rush to get the horses in - in case it's gonna rain.
I spend up every cent I've got - on horsey stuff for sure
I buy saddles, bridles, fancy boots - and then I buy some more.
I can't sew on a button - I don't even try
But I can back a truck and trailer - in the twinkling of an eye.
It's jeans and boots that I live in night and day
And that smell of sweaty horses just doesn't wash away.
I ache from long forgotten falls. My knees have got no skin.
My toes have gone a funny shape - from being stomped on again and again.
But late at night, when all is still - and I've gone to give them hay,
I touch their velvet softness and my worries float away.
They give a gentle nicker and they nuzzle through my hair
And I know it's where my heart is - more here than anywhere.

  1. I like horses too. I think you like them on a much higher level than me. But I remember having fun when we would go ride David's horses when we were little.

  2. On Thanksgiving, David reminded me of how he tried to get me to ride horses for years, and I wouldn't do it. But I helped lead the horses so everyone else could have a ride... It surprised me that he remembered that.

  3. Hi, Jen.

I love horses, too, but because of a bum knee, I can no longer ride them as I used to.

I dabble a little with photography and recently took a photo of horses in a snow storm. If you would like, I could send you a copy? Please let me know...

Love and respect. And, I hope things go alright for you with your impending divorce.

  4. Duck,
    I would LOVE a copy!!!
I'm so sad that you can't ride like you used to. I hope you can still see them and spend time with them... Horses have been some of my best therapists!

And thank you. I'm pretty lucky that my divorce is so smooth. We've both worked really hard to get to know ourselves and to be compassionate people, so it's going far better than most.

"Love and respect" I like that a lot.
Love and respect to you too.

  6. May I ask how you made your book gadget? That is very spiffy.

I just sent you a copy of the photo- one of them has my signature on it- it is the one I was meaning to send. The other copy does not have my signature on it, and it was NOT the one I meant to send. Would you be kind enough and delete it?

    Thank you!

My dad loves to ride horses and so I have been around them off and on since I was a teenager. I am not a hard-core horse person, but I do enjoy them. And, I do not know about you, but I enjoy rodeos. My uncles used to raise stock for many of the rodeos in the southern part of the state and my maternal grandfather was a national bareback riding champion.

I am glad your divorce is going smoothly. I am sure that helps a lot. I guess mine went as smoothly as could be expected, but it was still quite stressful. I was so glad when the court date finally arrived and I was able to get my annulment and move on. I wrote a little about it in the e-mail I sent you, along with the photo.

Thank you for the wishes of love and respect back to me. :)

    Have a good night.
