I am what I am

I love this song! How have I gone my whole life and didn't even know it existed:

"I don't need praise - I don't need pity.
I beat my own drum - some think it's noise.
I think it's pretty!"

  1. How did you not know? I supposed because you must not have ever attended a gay pride event, or a Broadway sing-along. It's from the Broadway show "La Cage Aux Folles" and then also appeared later in the movie of the same name.

In context, its a gay cross-dressing man who performs in a cabaret whose son is unsure about bringing his new fiance around to meet his Dads. In the end everyone recognizes that you shouldn't expect anyone to change appearances or who they really are to make someone else happy. It is a good message whatever the context but it is especially poignant for homosexuals because that's the original message.
